Conceptualized by a team of architects including Mario Peniche, Alejandro Vales, Augusto Quijano, Javier Muñoz, and Jorge Carlos Zoreda, this 6-bedroom colonial-era hacienda is one of the most breathtaking renovations in our collection. The project sought to embrace both the past and present by carefully preserving the existing ruins and adding exquisite contemporary accents.

In many respects, the renovation pays homage to the elements that shaped the original hacienda’s derelict beauty. Considering the Yucatán Peninsula’s unique climate and terrain, the architects’ interventions are designed to offer a refreshing respite from the sun's intensity.
For example, the collapsed ceilings of the upper floor of the main house presented an opportunity to create a unique indoor-outdoor space. The architects created garden areas where sunlight could filter through, utilizing elevated tanks that were formerly part of the hacienda’s water supply to build pools. This ingenious design references the hacienda’s history while creating an ethereal, organic aesthetic.
The centerpiece of the estate's renovation is the breathtaking pool, housed within a floating container in a shimmering lily pond. Located in the hacienda’s former drying patio, this grand water feature imaginatively integrates nature and architecture with rarely-seen elegance.

Hacienda Tamchen is a 6-bedroom property that sleeps up to 12 guests. Five of the bedrooms are doubles with king-size beds, while the remaining room has 2 twin beds. The property has 8.5 bathrooms, a modern, fully equipped kitchen, and a stunning double-height dining area. The property and its grounds can hold up to 250 people, making it a show-stopping venue for weddings and large events.
The hacienda has a carefully curated mix of contemporary furnishings and antiques. In the dining room, mid-century Danish-style seats are paired with an elegantly distressed antique dining table, complemented by remarkable 18th-century cabinets. In the bedrooms, Japanese-style tatami beds create a chic contrast with the original stone walling.
Outside, the house has 3 swimming pools. The extensive grounds include lawns, an orchard, a poolside terrace, and a shady passageway where hammocks hang from semi-derelict archways. The master suite has a private plunge pool, also set into a lily pond.
Hacienda Tamchen is 40 minutes from Mérida, Yucatán’s capital, in the tiny community that shares its name. Tamchén itself is little more than a cluster of houses and a small 17th-century church, so car hire is essential if you want to explore. However, for those looking for a total escape, the in-house catering team can prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The rate listed is for a single room. The full property can be rented for a rate starting at $4,500 USD. Contact us for unlisted rates and additional details.
