The house is not too far from downtown Tepoztlán — yet far enough to avoid all the hustle and bustle and enjoy the sound of birds and the tranquil ambiance of an oak and madroño forest.
Guests come here to disconnect, to immerse themselves in nature, and to savor the silence and stillness. The house features a rustic luxe minimalism where a mix of local earth, stone, wood, and naturally dyed textiles creates an exquisitely relaxing space where time seems to stand still.
To access this dreamy rustic retreat, you’ll drive along a paved road through the forest before arriving at a picturesque scene of bucolic serenity.
The home is conceived and hosted by Materru Lab, an architect and natural builder family company. While staying at this off-grid house, you’ll experience life in a 100% earthen home, where temperature and humidity regulate naturally—no need for high-tech air conditioning.
Tepoztlán was once a village of mostly adobe homes. People lived grounded, fresh, and healthy lives without modern aids. The home was built using those same ancestral principles, offering a clean, modern, cozy, and healthy environment. We hope you’ll feel and enjoy the difference.
As you walk in, a Japanese-inspired entryway welcomes you to leave all that is too heavy behind. From the vestibule, you can enter a full bathroom with a wide shower made from soothing dark Tadelakt, giving the space a certain mystique.
Passing through noren curtains, you’ll enter an open-plan kitchen and relaxed living area with a mezzanine. Double sheet doors lead to a large covered terrace with a dining and chill-out area. The terrace overlooks a petanca terrain and herb garden.
West of the terrace, you’ll find another open-ceiling terrace with a fireplace—perfect for sitting with the fire at night. From here, you can see distant city lights twinkling, and during the day, hear birdsong from the adjacent natural reserve, which guarantees your view stays green and wild.
The landscape is shaped by low volcanic rock walls, used to divide areas—much like how the ancestors of Tepoztlán built terrazas and tecorrales. If traveling with children or pets, please note the house has no perimeter walls. Your view merges seamlessly with the forest, but you’ll need to watch after kids and pets just as you would in nature.
From the terrace, there are three main doors. Two lead into the kitchen and living area. The third opens into a small studio filled with handpicked books—ideal for a leisure getaway or working retreat. From the studio, a door leads to the main bedroom with a full-size bed. The earthen walls and high ceilings offer deep, tranquil rest. In the main bathroom, you can shower in peach-colored Tadelakt or fill a small hot tub and forget the world.
