Two casitas emerge from the vegetation at the edge of the Pacific — stranded, in the best possible way, between sand and jungle. Designed by the award-winning firm Gaeta Springall Arquitectos, with planting curated by legendary architect Alberto Kalach, the homes feel less built than grown: their materials chosen to blend into the landscape while holding their own against the elements.
Each villa is conceived as a yin and yang — half gallery, half refuge. On one side, sliding handmade wooden panels open the interior entirely to nature; on the other, the space turns inward, intimate and still. The configuration shifts with the panels, making each stay feel unrepeatable.
The houses
The two villas sit on the same plot, connected by a plant-lined walkway and together sleeping up to ten. The first has two bedrooms — a king plus room for two singles — ideal for families or larger groups. The second has two king double bedrooms. Both have living and dining areas with basic kitchens.
The first villa faces the ocean directly, with an infinity pool framed by jungle and a walkway leading straight to the beach. The second sits further back among the trees, with its own pool, beach boardwalk, and a roof terrace — the quieter of the two, and the better spot for a sundowner.
Punta Pájaros is 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) and deliberately, blissfully isolated. The neighborhood — if it can be called that — amounts to three restaurants that close early, a mezcal bar, and a handful of art galleries. Its anchor is Casa Wabi, Bosco Sodi's celebrated art foundation housed in a building by Tadao Ando.
Rent a car or arrange a taxi to get here. Then don't plan to go anywhere.
