Casa Rosa is a stunning 3,300+ sq. ft. home in Merida, Mexico by the talented NKN Studio. The multi-year project transformed the home from ruins into a spectacular weekend home, complete with a courtyard pool and three comfortable. bedrooms.
The design preserves the original pink facade and incorporates geometric forms and varying heights to create seamless indoor-outdoor connections. The house is divided into three sections: the front contains shared spaces like the foyer, kitchen, living, and dining areas; the back houses three private bedrooms. At the center, an ancient stone ruin of unknown age has been restored and surrounded by a shallow pool, serving as a focal point and social space.
Materials and construction methods emphasize local tradition. Finishes include washed concrete, tzalam wood, pasta tiles, and chukum, a moisture-resistant Yucatecan finish. NKN Studio designed custom-built furniture and wooden sculptures by architect Miguel Tapia to complement the interiors. To manage the region’s heat, the house incorporates ventilation chimneys, elliptical arches for shade, and strategic landscaping with native plants. A large palm tree and a red cedar from the neighboring garden enhance the microclimate, ensuring natural cooling and integration with the surroundings.
