Explore Oaxaca like a local from the home away from home, Alcala 228. The residence is conveniently located a short walk away from the Centro Historico, mercados, and favorite restaurants and bars. With a commitment to ensuring a comfortable stay for guests, the aim in designing 228 was to create an ambiance that feels like a personal haven in one of the most magical cities in the world.
The Space
The Living Room & Kitchen
Upon entering 228, guests are welcomed by a fresh agua fresca, a botana of Oaxacan flavors, and Mezcal from some of the favorite Maestro Mezcaleros. The fully equipped kitchen allows guests to prepare delightful meals with ingredients from the local Mercado. Modern amenities include a drip coffee station, electric coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, gas range and oven, and a refrigerator with a 3.75-liter water capacity for filtered water, filled daily. Fresh coffee, cut-up fresh fruit, and daily fresh bread are included with the stay. The living room features a 65" 4K TV with Apple Airplay & Chromecast connectivity, a surround sound JBL soundbar, and a large Air Conditioning unit for a cool respite. A well-stocked bar with Mezcal from preferred Mezcaleros invites guests to sample a variety of agaves from the comfort of their vacation home.
The Main Floor Bedrooms
On the main floor, two welcoming mirrored bedrooms await. Each is equipped with a queen-size bed, a spacious closet, air conditioning, a charging hub, two bathrobes, and a double-doored balcony. In the hallway, a closet stores extra towels, sheets, pillows, an iron, and other essentials. The full bath on the main floor, located across from the winding staircase, features an open standing shower and a double sink countertop stationed under a beautiful, large hand-welded mirror. Locally made bath amenities, including shampoo, hand soap, and an exfoliating body bar loofa combination, are provided. Fresh towels and a hair dryer can be found under the sink.
The Terrace
After a day of exploration, guests can head back home to the open-air terrace designed for relaxation. The terrace features a hammock, a handmade straw mat, and a couch with a side table.
The Terrace Bedroom
To the left of the terrace entrance, the Terrace Bedroom offers a queen-size bed, nightstand, and Air Conditioning. The beauty of the domed ceiling and hand-made circular installation lighting the room is highlighted. Guests can choose to wind down in the air-conditioned room or on the hammock on the open-air terrace.
The Terrace Bathroom
The compact bathroom on the terrace has everything needed to make it feel like a personal living area. Locally made bath amenities, including shampoo, hand soap, and an exfoliating body bar loofa combination, are provided. Fresh towels, a hair dryer, and bathrobes can be found across from the sink.
The Downstairs Master Bedroom
Exiting the main floor into the backyard, guests descend down the stairs to the private Master Bedroom. This beautifully restored space showcases a king-size bed and a queen-size pull-out, along with drawers, a hanging rod, a bench, and air conditioning. All furniture is custom handmade wooden pieces made with local hardwoods. Vintage JBL speakers, powered by an easy-to-connect Bluetooth receiver, add a touch of nostalgia. Hand-woven rugs by local artisans warm the polished concrete floors. The Downstairs Master Bathroom, accessible from the bedroom, features locally made bath amenities, including shampoo, hand soap, and an exfoliating body bar loofa combination. Fresh towels, a hair dryer, and bathrobes are provided and can be found under the sink.
The Backyard
As guests step into the backyard, they might forget they are in the middle of Oaxaca city and think they have traveled into a jungle. On the first level of the outdoor space, local herbs are available for tea, cooking, or making the space smell amazing. Two large nut trees cover the space, and guests are free to park a car if they wish. The main event of the backyard is the Cocina de Humo, a traditional outdoor brick and clay kitchen made in the style of the owners' Grandmother's outdoor kitchen. If guests would like a meal prepared in this outdoor kitchen, they can make a request. As guests descend one level outside of the downstairs Master Bedroom, they will find a social area from which to make plans or discuss favorite parts of the day under the Oaxacan Clouds. Behind this space is a collection of dessert plants, including Maguey Espadin, Madre Cuish, cacti, and other local varieties of plants. One level further down, guests will find an enclosed lush and green patio space that makes the perfect backdrop for envy-inducing pictures.
