Casa Tropical, designed by Jaque Studio in Tulum, is an L-shaped residence built around a natural spring and existing jungle trees. By preserving 77% of the original vegetation, the design ensures the home remains deeply integrated with its environment. The narrow floor plan allows for constant cross-ventilation and natural light in every room.
The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Mexican haciendas, using a long open-air terrace as the main hallway. This layout blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, giving each bedroom its own private patio and outdoor bath. High ceilings help keep the interior cool while providing expansive views of the surrounding tropical greenery.
The project is entirely off-the-grid, powered by solar energy and featuring its own wastewater treatment system. It primarily uses local materials like limestone, chukum plaster, and sustainably sourced wood. This approach highlights the studio’s commitment to a low carbon footprint and a design that respects the Caribbean landscape.
